Which Email Host Runs This Domain?

An email hosting lookup answers a different question than a plain DNS query. You rarely want the raw record — you want to know who is on the other end. A domain's MX records are a fingerprint: aspmx.l.google.com means Google Workspace, *.mail.protection.outlook.com means Microsoft 365, *.pphosted.com means Proofpoint sits in front of the real mailbox.

An MX (Mail Exchange) record is a DNS entry naming the mail server responsible for receiving email for a domain. Every domain that can receive mail has at least one. The record also carries a priority number, which is how a domain declares a backup server.
An MX record lookup queries DNS for a domain's MX entries and returns the mail server hostnames and their priorities. This tool goes one step further: it reads those hostnames as a fingerprint and names the email host behind them, so you get "Google Workspace" rather than a list of aspmx hostnames to interpret yourself.

Priority decides which mail server a sender tries first, and lower numbers win. If the lowest-numbered server does not answer, the sending system falls back to the next. Several records at different priorities is normal and healthy — it is how a domain survives one mail server going down.
